SMWC Soccer Falls At Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer battled evenly for much of the afternoon but fell 2-0 on the road to Goshen College on Saturday at the Ingold Complex.

The Pomeroys (0-4-0) kept the Maple Leafs off the scoreboard through 78 minutes before Goshen broke through late. Alejandro Portocarrero scored on a free kick service from the right side in the 80th minute for the first tally. Jethro Ndyomugabe added an insurance goal in the 87th minute, finishing a pass from Nicholas Whitaker.

SMWC generated eight shots, including three on frame. Ivan Gelado Chavala led the attack with three attempts, while Santiago Abraham and Jamachi Obiukwu each added a shot on goal. Goshen outshot the Pomeroys 21-8 overall and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Pomeroy goalkeeper Harry Jackson turned away six shots in 90 minutes of action, keeping his team in contention until the final stretch.

SMWC will look to regroup when it travels to Calumet College of St. Joseph on Thursday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (CT) in Whiting, Ind.
