SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.V. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team wrapped up its 2025 season Friday afternoon (May 2) with a 5-3 loss to IU-Southeast on the second day of the River States Conference Tournament. The Pomeroys close the campaign with an overall record of 18-28.
SMWC jumped out to a 3-1 lead after two innings. Senior
Kyar McVey led the way, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single, two stolen bases, and a run scored. McVey opened the scoring in the first, coming home on a sacrifice bunt by
Caeden Bennett. In the second inning,
Hailey Boardman added a sacrifice fly, and McVey followed with an infield RBI single to extend the lead.
Junior pitcher
Emily Fitzwater (5-11) provided 5.1 innings of relief, allowing four runs—just two earned—on eight hits while striking out two. However, IU Southeast rallied with a four-run sixth inning, aided by two SMWC errors and timely hits to overtake the Pomeroys.
Despite recording eight hits, SMWC couldn't overcome the late surge. IU Southeast starter
Davis earned the win with a complete-game performance, allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
Though the loss ends their postseason run, the Pomeroys celebrated a major achievement earlier in the week with
eight players named to the All-River States Conference Teams, highlighting a season of standout individual performances. Additionally,
Lanna Martinez was selected as the SMWC representative on the River States Conference Champions of Character Team.
