Pomeroy Softball Earns Sweep Over Visiting Rio Grande (Ohio)

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind.  — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team earned a hard-fought sweep of a River States Conference doubleheader over Rio Grande (Ohio) by identical scores of 4-3 on Thursday (March 27) at the SMWC Softball Field.

SMWC moved to 13-11 overall and 8-6 inside River States Conference play. The Pomeroys are right back at it on Friday, March 28 when they host Shawnee State (Ohio) for a pair of contests beginning at 3 pm (ET). Rio Grande fell to 21-7 and 11-3 in conference play.

GAME ONE:
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods erased an early deficit and held off Rio Grande for a 4-3 win in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader.

Rio Grande struck early, plating three runs in the first inning. Adams doubled home a run before Reck followed with a two-run triple to put the RedStorm ahead 3-0.

SMWC responded in the second when Boardman scored on a throwing error, and Crawford came home on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 3-2. The Pomeroys tied it in the third as Fuller's RBI single brought McVey across the plate.

The decisive blow came in the sixth, when Jaynes delivered a go-ahead RBI single, scoring Boardman to give SMWC a 4-3 lead.

Fitzwater settled in after the rocky first inning, tossing a complete game while allowing six hits and striking out two. Ogden took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs over six innings.

GAME TWO:
SMWC held off a late push from Rio Grande (21-7) to secure a 4-3 victory in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader, completing the sweep.

Rio Grande took an early lead in the first inning as Adams and Reck each drove in runs for a 2-0 advantage. SMWC answered in the bottom half, with Crawford's two-run double tying the game before Jaynes came home on an error to put the Pomeroys up 3-2.

Moultray extended the lead in the second, scoring on Fuller's RBI single to make it 4-2. The Pomeroys' pitching and defense held strong until the seventh, when Rio Grande threatened. The RedStorm pushed across a run on a fielder's choice, but Moultray (3-0) forced a game-ending groundout to seal the win as the Pomeroys nailed a runner who drifted too far off of second base.

Moultray went the distance, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out two. McCallum took the loss for Rio Grande after giving up four runs—only one earned—over two innings.
