Pomeroys Break Out The Bats To Sweep Brescia (Ky.)

OWENSBORO, Ky.  — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team had the luck of the Irish on their side as the bats broke out on Monday afternoon (March 17) in a doubleheader road sweep of River States Conference foe Brescia (Ky.). The Pomeroys won the first game 5-2 and came back to win the second by the score of 8-4.

The victories improved the SMWC overall record to 9-7 and leveled their RSC mark at 4-4. Brescia fell to 5-9 and 4-4 in league play. The Pomeroys are right back at it on Tuesday (March 18) when they travel to IU-Columbus for a pair of games beginning at 1 pm (ET).

GAME ONE:
SMWC broke a late tie to defeat Brescia (Ky.) 5-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The game saw The Woods score three unanswered runs over the final three innings to secure the victory.

The Pomeroys grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Emily Fitzwater to score Boardman and Mills. Brescia scored one run in both the third and fourth innings to the game.

The score remained tied at 2-2 until the sixth inning, when SMWC broke through with three runs. Boardman singled to right-center for an RBI, followed by another RBI single from Hannah Boardman to make it 4-2. Fitzwater then added an insurance run with a single up the middle, scoring Boardman for the final 5-2 margin.

SMWC's pitcher, Emily Fitzwater, went the distance, throwing a complete game to earn the victory. She allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out five and walking three. Brescia's F. Cunningham (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on six hits over three innings of work.

Mikayla Mills led the Woods at the plate, going 3-for-5, while Hailey Boardman had two hits and two RBIs. For Brescia, Goeppner's homer was the highlight of their offensive efforts.

GAME TWO:
SMWC completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-4 victory over Brescia (Ky.) in the second game of the day. The Woods scored early and held off a late rally to improve to 9-7 on the season.

The Pomeroys quickly took control in the first inning, scoring two runs. A groundout from Jackson brought home Henderson, and Cooksey's single plated Broughton to make it 2-0. Brescia answered in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly from Bradbury, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Woods continued their offensive attack in the second, adding two more runs. A hit-by-pitch to Henderson brought in a run, and a sacrifice fly from Singleton pushed the score to 4-1. Brescia scored once more in the third on an RBI single from Bradbury, but SMWC responded with a four-run fourth inning.

Henderson singled in a run, and Broughton followed with a two-run double to center field, increasing the lead to 7-2. Cooksey added another run with a groundout to short, bringing the score to 8-2.

Brescia managed to score twice in the fifth inning, including an RBI double from Jones, but could not close the gap further.

Madison Moultray (2-0) picked up the win for SMWC, tossing three strong innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two. Alex Overman finished the game, going four innings and giving up two unearned runs on seven hits.

Brescia's starter, A. Riley (0-1), took the loss after allowing four runs in just one inning of work.
