COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team dominated in a 90-54 road win over Indiana University Columbus on Saturday afternoon. The Pomeroys improve to 14-12 on the season and will return home to face Oakland City (Ind.) on Tuesday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. ET inside Knoerle Center.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods led from start to finish, outscoring IU-Columbus in every quarter. The Pomeroys shot 40.3% from the field and knocked down five three-pointers, in addition to making 23-of-33 free throws (69.7%).
Top Performances:
- Madison Fueger was a standout for the Pomeroys, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Fueger went 5-of-11 from the field, including 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
- Brooklynn Jones contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while also dishing out three assists.
- Samara Douglas had an impressive outing off the bench, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She helped to lead the Pomeroys' strong performance in the paint, as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods scored 40 points inside.
- Diamond Bryant contributed seven points, six rebounds, and three assists in the win.
Abby Worley recorded six assists in the contest to give her 389 for her career — just two away from tying Darci Rector for the SMWC all-time record.
The Pomeroys opened the game with a strong defensive presence, forcing multiple turnovers and capitalizing on IU-Columbus' struggles to find their rhythm.
Madison Fueger led the way early, scoring several key buckets in the paint and grabbing rebounds to help her team establish control. Fueger finished the quarter with seven points, including a layup that gave the Pomeroys a 16-6 lead with 2:26 remaining.
Brooklynn Jones also contributed offensively, scoring a quick layup at the 9:04 mark to give SMWC the first points of the game. She added another jumper shortly after to help keep the Pomeroys in the lead.
Despite a few missed shots from the Pomeroys, including a missed layup and jumper by Fueger and Jones, the Pomeroys capitalized on their second-chance opportunities, especially through offensive rebounds. Jones was particularly active on the boards, securing key rebounds that allowed her team to extend possessions and build momentum.
IU-Columbus, led by Jacelyn Starks, managed to keep the game close, with Starks scoring six points in the opening quarter, including a layup that briefly cut the Pomeroys' lead to 9-6 with 5:03 left. However, the Pomeroys' defense stifled the Trailblazers, limiting their scoring to just 12 points in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Pomeroys' aggressive play continued as
Diamond Bryant and
Samara Douglas both made strong contributions. Bryant scored a layup with just under three minutes left to push the lead to 13-6, and Douglas added a layup of her own shortly thereafter to make it 16-6.
A brief scoring surge by IU-Columbus, highlighted by a three-pointer from Amaya Collins with 33 seconds left, was not enough to close the gap. St. Mary-of-the-Woods led 20-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Pomeroys, already up 20-12 after the first quarter, quickly seized control of the second period with a 4-0 run to start the quarter.
Diamond Bryant hit a jumper early to push the lead to 22-12, followed by a strong layup from
Brooklynn Jones that made it 24-12 with 9:08 remaining.
IU-Columbus struggled to keep pace as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' defense tightened and the Pomeroys capitalized on turnovers.
Irye Gomez and Jones combined for key steals that led to fast-break points. Jones scored a layup at the 5:51 mark, bringing the score to 31-17, and followed it up with another layup shortly after to give her team a 34-20 lead.
IU-Columbus managed a brief scoring burst midway through the quarter. Amaya Collins hit a three-pointer with 8:36 left, trimming the deficit to 24-15, and later added a layup to bring the score to 25-17. However, the Trailblazers were unable to sustain the momentum as they continued to struggle with shooting, including missing several three-pointers.
SMWC remained efficient at the free-throw line, as
Samara Douglas hit several key free throws, including two consecutive shots that stretched the Pomeroys' lead to 29-17. The Pomeroys maintained their strong play inside, with Douglas and Jones both contributing with layups in the paint.
IU-Columbus answered with some of their best offensive moments late in the quarter. Jacelyn Starks hit a three-pointer with just 20 seconds left, bringing the Trailblazers to 40-29. But the Pomeroys quickly responded with a layup from
Abigail Parker as the final seconds ticked away, giving Saint Mary-of-the-Woods a 42-29 halftime lead.
Leading by 19 points heading into the final period, the Pomeroys quickly expanded their advantage with a pair of free throws by
Destiny Thomas, making it 63-43. Indiana struggled to find a rhythm as St. Mary-of-the-Woods showcased its depth with a balanced scoring attack.
The Pomeroys' defense continued to stifle IU-Columbus, as they forced multiple turnovers, including a steal by
Madison Fueger that led to a layup, extending the lead to 66-46. Fueger was instrumental in the final frame, adding several key points, including two more free throws at 7:55 to push the lead to 68-46.
IU-Columbus managed a brief surge with a three-pointer from Lily Campbell at 9:00, bringing the score to 64-46, but the Pomeroys responded quickly.
Abby Worley and
Talyssa Moody both scored inside, extending the lead to 74-46 with 6:16 remaining.
The game became more lopsided as the Pomeroys' reserves made significant contributions.
Kylee Stepp hit back-to-back three-pointers, including one at 1:29 to make it 83-54. By the time Moody added a three-pointer at 1:08, the Pomeroys had built a commanding 87-54 lead.
In the final moments, Stepp completed the scoring barrage with a 3-pointer at 36 seconds remaining, giving the Pomeroys their largest lead of the game at 90-54.
The Pomeroys' balanced attack and defensive intensity proved to be too much for the Trailblazers, as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods built a lead as large as 36 points in the final minutes of the game.
