SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team continued its standout season Tuesday night with a 3–1 victory over Shawnee State (Ohio) in the River States Conference Tournament quarterfinals inside the Knoerle Center. The Pomeroys improved to 30-5 overall with set scores of
25–11, 19–25, 28–26, and 25–17, advancing to Friday's semifinal round against Rio Grande.
Senior setter
Aden Britt headlined the win with another record-breaking performance, surpassing the
SMWC single-season service aces record with
66 after totaling
six aces in the match. Britt also posted
53 assists, marking the
most assists in a four-set match in program history, while adding
12 digs and four kills in the all-around effort.
The Pomeroys' attack was led by
Karla Melendez and
Masa Pesic, who each tallied
17 kills, while
Lisanel Rodriguez added
13 kills. SMWC hit
.273 as a team compared to Shawnee State's .150.
Defensively,
Leishmarie Virella paced the back row with
21 digs, and
Daniella Zvonar added
13 digs.
Sofia Soto recorded
three blocks, while
Felicia Omosebi added two to help control the net.
SMWC opened the match with a dominant first set, hitting .385 while holding Shawnee State to a negative percentage. The Bears responded with a strong second set to even the match before the Pomeroys prevailed in a tight 28–26 third frame and sealed the victory with a 25–17 win in the fourth.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods finished with
61 kills, 60 assists, 11 aces, six team blocks, and 69 digs. Shawnee State totaled
42 kills, 38 assists, four aces, and 62 digs. Attendance was listed at
319 inside the Knoerle Center.
The victory sends SMWC to the
River States Conference semifinals on
Friday, November 14, where the Pomeroys will face
Rio Grande at
4:00 p.m. (ET). The winner will advance to Saturday's championship match. The semifinals and final will be held in Kokomo, Ind.
