Rio Grande Defeats SMWC In River States Play

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team fell 5-2 to the University of Rio Grande on Thursday afternoon in River States Conference play at the SMWC Soccer Complex.

The RedStorm (3-3-3, 1-0 RSC) built an early cushion with three first-half goals, including strikes from Facundo Rossich in the 6th minute and Will Perry in the 22nd, plus an own goal in the 21st. Rossich added a second tally in the 51st minute, while Estevao Goncalves closed the scoring in the 81st. Perry and Matthew Donaldson each added assists, and Luke Tinkler also contributed an assist on the final goal.

The Pomeroys (3-9, 1-2 RSC) stayed within reach thanks to a pair of strong finishes. Jacobo Galvez converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute for his first goal of the season, and Andoni Ybanez struck in the 53rd minute off a combination from Marc Valderrama and Harry Jackson.

Rio Grande outshot SMWC 11-5, with a 7-3 advantage in shots on target and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Samy Hamou recorded one save for the RedStorm, while Jackson made two saves in net for SMWC.

Rossich led Rio Grande with two goals on two shots, while Perry finished with a goal and an assist. For the Pomeroys, Ybanez and Galvez each tallied on their lone shot on goal.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will look to bounce back on the road Saturday, Oct. 4, with a 3:15 p.m. (ET) conference kickoff at Kentucky Christian.
