PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team picked up a marquee River States Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Shawnee State
3-1 in the league's featured
Game of the Week at Waller Gymnasium.
The Pomeroys improved to
24-2 overall and 8-1 in RSC play with the win, while Shawnee State fell to 16-8 (6-3). Set scores were
24-26, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 as SMWC bounced back after a narrow first-set loss to take control of the match.
SMWC won the statistical battle across the board, finishing with advantages in kills (57-49), hitting percentage (.229 to .139), digs (90-83), blocks (15-2), and aces (11-2).
Senior
Karla Melendez powered the Pomeroy attack with a match-high
21 kills, hitting .422 while adding
14 digs and 4 blocks.
Masa Pesic contributed 10 kills, and
Sofia Soto tallied 9 kills with a .333 hitting percentage to go with 4 blocks.
Setter
Aden Britt turned in a standout performance, dishing out
40 assists while serving up
6 aces and adding
20 digs. Defensive specialist
Leishmarie Virella anchored the back row with a career-high
30 digs and chipped in 10 assists and 2 aces.
Evelyn Morales led the blocking effort with 5.0 total blocks.
The win solidifies SMWC's place near the top of the RSC standings as the season heads into its stretch run.
The Pomeroys will continue conference play on the road, traveling to
Rio Grande on Friday, Oct. 17, for a 7 p.m. (ET) matchup.
