MARSHALL, Texas – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team ran their season-opening winning streak out to 12 matches with a pair of victories on Friday (Sept. 6) on the opening day of the Wiley University Shootout. SMWC won both contests with 3-0 sweeps of the opposition.
The Pomeroys move to an undefeated 12-0 on the season with the two victories. Wiley fell to 0-3 while Louisiana Christian is now 5-7.
In the day's opening game, the Pomeroys were dominant with set wins by the scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-15. Tori Schopmeyer was effective at the net with 13 kills while Grace Geisler added seven. Holly Linville and Leishmarie Virella added three service aces while Linville and Evelyn Morales led the way with three total blocks each. Aden Britt dished out 16 set assists and Virella added 13 digs.
Wiley would score of the first three points in the opening set before SMWC came back with four in a row to take the lead. The Pomeroys scored six of the next seven points capped by a kill from Linville for the 11-5 lead. SMWC scored the final four points of the set including a Linville service ace on set point for the 25-14 victory.
In the second set, the Pomeroys raced out to a 7-1 lead capped by a Schopmeyer kill. SMWC would win it with the final six points of the set including a service ace from Geisler for the 25-9 win. The Pomeroys would score four in a row early in the decider for a 9-3 lead. Once again, SMWC scored the final six points of the set for the 25-15 victory.
In the second game of the day against Louisiana Christian, the Pomeroys earned a 3-0 sweep by set scores of 25-22, 25-15, 25-12.
Karla Melendez and Masa Pesic paced the team with 10 kills each with Melendez owning an attack percentage of .400 and Pesic checking in at .348. Ariana Cruz posted 17 set assists and Alexis Keoho tallied 13. Melendez was credited with a trio of services aces and Jocelyn Chavez owned a pair.
At the net, Alex Hernandez posted three total blocks while Isabel Hansen also posted three. Cruz led the way with 12 digs in the contest.
In the opening set, the Pomeroys trailed 22-17 but were able to rattle off each of the final eight points to secure the victory. Blocks from Hansen and Pesic secured the 25-17 win. In the second set, an early 7-0 lead staked the Pomeroys to a 12-4 lead that they held onto throughout. In the clincher, the Pomeroys took control with an 8-0 run which pushed their lead out to 20-6 in the win.
SMWC will be on short rest for the rest of the tournament as they come right back at 8 am (CT) to face off against John Melvin University and come right back at 10 am (CT) to take on Paul Quin College.
