SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Every set was close on Friday night at the Knoerle Center but it was the visiting No. 13 Lourdes University Gray Wolves which walked away with a 3-0 victory over the Pomeroys (26-24, 25-20, 25-19).
The Pomeroys dropped to 13-11, 2-9 WHAC while the Gray Wolves improved to 10-7, 10-1 WHAC.
Marko Zolnjan led the way with 16 kills in the contest while Andrej Linder posted seven. The Pomeroys were credited with four service aces in the contest. At the net,
Joey Anderson recorded four blocks while
Ethan Martins posted 32 set assists and
Brycen Yadao had 15 digs.
In the first set, the Woods battled back from a 17-14 deficit with consecutive points from Lindner and a service ace by
Brayden Baxter to trim it down to 17-16. A Zolnjan kill late in the set followed by a Gray Wolves attack error knotted the score at 19. Zolnjan would get a kill first and then Anderson recorded another to knot the game at 23. Zolnjan posted another kill to set up set point for the Pomeroys at 24-23, but Lourdes scored the next three points to win 26-24.
In the second set, the Woods would take advantage of blocks from Martins and Anderson as well as Lindner and Yummier Martinez plus a kill by Zolnjan to knot the contest at 9. Blocks from Fetulimoeata and Anderson made it 23-20 in favor of the Gray Wolves but that would be as close as they would get in falling 25-20
.
A kill from Lindner staked the Pomeroys to an early 1-0 lead but the Gray Wolves responded with the next four in a row. The Poms would get back-to-back kills from Lindner and Zolnjan as well a Gray Wolf attack error to trim the deficit down to just 13-10. A solo block by Martinez and Lourdes attack error got the Woods within 16-15 but the Gray Wolves finished strong in the third set to win 25-19.
The Pomeroys are back in action and take on Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Lourdes University on Saturday, March 23 at Noon (ET) inside the Knoerle Center.
