The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead, winning 25-22, 25-21, Friday night in Hamilton Arena, but visiting Goshen wasn't giving up the fight.Â
The Maple Leafs bounced back to win 25-19 in the third and fourth sets, forcing a fifth set.Â
But the Pomeroys came through in the clutch, taking the fifth set 15-8 on a kill by
Joseph Szadorski off the set from
Jacob Wisniewski, who had 20 assists.
"We came out hot and got the first two sets," coach
Ian Harris said. "We lost all our energy. The inexperience of our team showed. We really challenged the guys in the fifth set. I told them 'if you guys play together, believe in each other and you trust each other, we will win this fifth set.'"Â
Szadorski had three of his seven kills in the decisive set.Â
Freshman
Bentley Meyer also put away three kills in the fifth and finished with a team-high 16 on 34 swings for a .265 hitting percentage.Â
Christian Green chipped in eight kills to go with five blocks.Â
Yammiel Martinez added nine blocks on the night in the middle.
SMWC had twice as many aces as the Maple Leafs with eight.
Marko Zolnjan led the way with three, followed by two by
Andrej Lindner and two from
Connor Orrock.Â
Brycen Yadao had 10 digs to lead SMWC.Â
