Barnes plays hero in homecoming trip to southern Indiana

NEW ALBANY -- Cobie Barnes made a lot of memories on the high school courts in and around New Albany, Ind., as a an all-state player for Floyd Central High School.
The Pomeroys' senior added one more with a game-winning three-point play with 2.7 seconds left at the Activities Center on the campus of Indiana University Southeast. Barnes hit the off-balance baseline jumper and then converted the free throw to put SMWC ahead 79-78. That stood as the final score Tuesday as IU Southeast's desperation half-court attempt was off target.
"Being able to come home and win is amazing. My teammates and coaches told me that they were gonna take care of me and make sure that it's a night for me to remember and it was just that," Barnes said.
The victory gave SMWC its 20th of the season overall and improved the Pomeroys to 14-1 in the River States Conference, keeping the Pomeroys atop the league standings.
Barnes not only had the game-winniner but finished with a career-best 35 points, the second best single-game performance in program history.
The 6-foot-7 forward made 13 of 25 from the field, 3 of 9 from 3-point range and 6 of 7 at the free-throw line.
Barnes was not the only Pomeroy player to come through in crunch time.
Greg Jenkins had two of his 13 points with four minutes to go to put SMWC ahead by three. Shon Tupuola had a go-ahead bucket with 1:18 to go and a 3-point play with 1:56 remaining. Tupuola finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Chaz Birchfield also reached double figures with 10 points.
