JOILET, Ill. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball picked up their second road win of the young season with a thrilling 85-77 win at the University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2).
SMWC improved to 2-0 while St. Francis dropped to 3-1. The Pomeroys followed up a road win over Judson on Friday night with Saturday's road win on short rest.
Madison Fueger led four Pomeroys in double figures scoring with 16 points as she hit 6-of-11 shots from the field to go with a pair of rebounds and steals.
Irye Gomez tallied 15 points off the bench with a 5-of-8 shooting performance including a pair of 3-pointers. Brooklyn Jones tallied 14 points in the game and now sits a 992 for her career as she looks to become the next member of the SMWC 1,000 point club. She hit 6-of-11 shots from the field and tallied four rebounds in the win.
Destiny Thomas 5-of-10 from the field to score 13 points with a pair of trifectas with three rebounds and four assists.
Diamond Bryant tallied seven rebounds to lead the way while
Aubrey Burgess tallied six assists.
For the game, the Pomeroys hit 31-of-64 shots from the field (48.4 percent) and were 8-of-17 from long range (47.1 percent).
SMWC got off to a great start and led 28-19 at the end of the first quarter. Thomas hit a jumper near the end of the quarter to take the nine point lead. A 3-pointer by Gomez with 3:56 remaining before the half gave SMWC a 38-28 lead. Gomez hit another 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining as the Pomeroys took a 46-39 lead at the break.
Matea Bartell scored with three seconds left before the end of the third quarter to stretch the SMWC lead out to 60-51. A 3-pointer by Audrey Burgess early in the fourth quarter with 9:22 to go stretch the SMWC lead out to 63-53. Despite St. Francis getting as close as four points late in the period, the Pomeroys hit their free throws to earn the 85-77 victory.
The Pomeroys will host Loudres on Wednesday, November 6 at 6 pm (ET) in their home opener inside the Knoerle Center.
