Pomeroys suffer tough result despite solid play

When Taiwo Anifowose took a towering cross from Abraham Abdoul Kadri and powered a header into the opposite corner of the net from 10 yards out Thursday afternoon, it felt like the moment the Pomeroys took control of the action against visiting IU East.
The sequence had come in the 51st minute, on the heels of SMWC's Yazen Bakhrebah taking a penalty kick that was saved by a diving Red Wolves goalkeeper.
But IU East rebounded 12 minutes later with a goal by Tristan Thomas. The Red Wolves took the lead in the 73rd minute on a goal by Vince Brown.
Despite taking 20 shots overall and 12 shots on goal, the Pomeroys left the SMWC Field with a missed opportunity.
Still, co-head coach Brady Cole was enthusiastic about the performance by his team that is progressing quickly in the new system with Cole and Ron Kiernicki leading what is a talented group of veteran players mixed with many freshmen playing key roles.
SMWC was coming off a match Tuesday that was suspended with SMWC leading Georgetown, Ky., 1-0.
"I thought we played beautifully and translated our successes Tuesday into our match today," Cole said. "With 20 shots, 12 being on frame, is our best to date and when you compare that to three shots total in last week's RSC match, they are showing potential to start finishing games.
'Disicipline is the key to smiling in the face of adversity and pushing through the pitfalls of matches. We look forward to continued progress Saturday (at Midway)."
