Pomeroys fall short in NAIA Opening Round

Five Saint Mary-of-the-Woods players had two hits as the Pomeroys collected 13 total, including four doubles Tuesday against Coastal Georgia.
But the Pomeroys left nine runners stranded and lost 8-4 to No. 2-seed Coastal Georgia (41-11), which got eight of its 12 hits in a 7-run fifth inning.
"It's rough when you outhit somebody and don't get the win. They hit gaps (in the fifth inning) and that changed all of it," said sophomore center fielder Tori Lee.
SMWC finishes 36-16, which is the third best win total in total for the storied program.
"It was a good season. We have a great team. We'll have an even better team next season with the freshman class coming in," said Lyric Krause, who led the offense with three RBIs. "Sometimes the ball doesn't fall your direction. We played the best we could. We're on our way back home, but we're ready to come back strong next year."
Coach Jim Walker lamented that the Pomeroys could not limit the big inning to just a run or two.
"We did a lot of things well, we just didn't quite do enough things well. One play here, one play there. If we make a play and limit the damage in that seven-run inning, it's a different thing. It just seemed like they hit it where we weren't," Walker said.
Bryce Peacock, the Sun Conference Player of the Year, got the scoring started in the first inning for the Mariners with an RBI triple off Lana Martinez.
The Pomeroys took the lead in the third when Krause doubled to the fence in right field to score Jaleigh Crawford and Justyce Rohrabaugh. Rohrabaugh reached on an infield single and Crawford doubled.
Krause added an RBI hit in the fifth to score Abbi Henderson and give the Pomeroys a 3-1 lead.
Summer Rocha (15-9) relieved Martinez in the third inning and did not allow a hit in her first two innings of work. The Mariners got going in the fifth, plating seven runs on eight hits.
Jaselyn Conn, who went 2 for 4, started the sixth with a double, her 14th of the season, and Mikayla Mills followed with a single to right field.
Katrina Strow picked up an RBI with a sharply-hit ground ball through the right side of the infield. But Hayley Dickerson got Henderson to strike out before coaxing groundouts from Rohrabaugh and Crawford to end the rally.
Three freshmen, Rohrabaugh Crawford and Jasmine Kinzer, had two hits in the game. Henderson, Emily Singleton and Martinez are also freshmen.
"I'm so proud of this freshman class," Krause said. "From the starters to those coming in to pinch hit. I'm so incredibly proud of all of them."
Krause is a senior but plans to play one additional season. Camryn Scott, the First-Team All-RSC second baseman, is the one regular in the lineup lost to graduation. Scott did not play in the NAIA Opening Round due to beginning a post-graduation internship opportunity.
"Cam's a big loss, but again we did a lot of things really well today," Walker said. "When we run up against these teams that are Top 10 in the country, we seem to fall a little bit short. What are we going to do as a team and individually over the summer to get a little bit better so that we can get ourselves over the edge. That's going to come from how much they work in the off-season."
