For a season that spans from August to late October, the season runs the course of multiple mini-seasons.
For the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's volleyball team, it has transitioned from the non-conference "season" to the River States Conference "season." To qualify for postseason play, the Pomeroys will need to have success against RSC opponents.Â
The Pomeroys went 14-0 during the nonconference, putting together solid performances that included excellent serving, developing emerging attackers to complement
Hannah Zuege and playing strong defense.Â
"We've done a good job of being able to execute in key moments. That's something we were really focused on in the beginning of really working on that. We did a good job of that during our nonconference games. There's always going to be some 2-3 point runs. We were able to execute sooner," coach
Ashley Harris said.
Statistically, the Pomeroys moved up to as high as fifth in the nation in service aces per set during the nonconference.
"Our serving has definitely kept us in a lot of tougher matches. Even strength at the net. The serving has definitely elevated us in some of those matches," Harris said.
The Pomeroys moved on to open RSC play on Saturday, falling in four sets to Midway. The Eagles were picked to finish second in the RSC in the preseason coaches poll after going 24-5 overall and 14-3 in the RSC last season.
Now, the Pomeroys are ready for their first RSC home match, taking on IU East, a team picked third in the RSC.
"These first two matches will be a good indication of where we're stacking up," Harris said.
