SMWC Stuns #1 Clinton College in 76-66 Win

Secure Spot in Championship Game vs #3 D'Youville

Box Score PETERSBURG, Va. – The SMWC Women's Basketball team stunned the top ranked Clinton College today with a 76-66 victory. The game wasn't as close as the score would suggest as the Pomeroys flipped the script from their first game and built a first half lead that they wouldn't surrender. The win puts them one away from the Championship as they prepare to face #3 D'Youville.
1st Half:

Both teams went back and first through the first quarter until a 10-0 run by the Pomeroys gave them a 20-9 lead with 2:45 remaining. SMWC would hold on to that lead, even growing it to 14 off strong play in the paint and much better rebounding than we saw against B&S-Syracuse. Clinton struggled to get any of their shots to go in and the Pomeroys capitalized on the other end of the floor with good ball movement and creating open looks. SMWC would balloon their lead to 18 as they finish the first half up 42-24.

2nd Half:

SMWC was in this situation a couple days ago when they found themselves down 21 at the half so not letting Clinton get the momentum back was key. Two quick buckets under the basket by Destiny Thomas kept that momentum on their side, but some tough fouls would bring that 22-point lead back to 16. Excellent free throw shooting would keep Clinton at bay as the Pomeroys just looked cleaner throughout the game. More foul trouble in the 4th quarter would start to give Clinton an avenue to success but even a 10-point lead with under a minute to play was too much for them. Abby Worley was nearly lights out at the free throw line to wrap this one up and give the Pomeroys a chance at the title.
By the Numbers
  • Abby Worley led the team with 15 points while adding 4 rebounds and 5 assists. She was followed in scoring by Brooklyn Jones (13), Allyson Hardiek (11), Destiny Thomas (10) to round out the team's double-digit scorers.
  • Avalee Jeffers topped the team with 9 rebounds while Worley and Thomas added 5 assists apiece.
  • The team shot 47.5% from the field while holding Clinton to 31.6% shooting and 12.0% from deep.
  • The Pomeroys had to overcome some turnovers issues, 23 to Clinton's 14, but their excellent team play and defense sealed the win.
