Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball coach Mike Hunter wants to give his team exposure to top-level competition.
The Pomeroys tested themselves against NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois University on Monday afternoon, falling by a final of 102-40.
With the team's regular rotation, the Pomeroys fought foul trouble in the first half, but were within 25-15 on a Tarik Dixon 3-pointer with 7 minutes remaining before halftime.
EIU was able to stretch the lead to 33-15 with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes. SMWC went into the half with a 43-21 deficit.
"Honestly our defense was pretty good. We held them to 43 at halftime, but 13 of that was free throws. We held them to 13 of 31 from the field," Hunter said.
The SMWC starters left the court for the final time trailing 51-25 with 16 minutes remaining. EIU continued to stretch its lead the remainder of the contest.
Braden Edington (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) led the Pomeroys with nine points before fouling out.
"We've been trying to get Braden untracked for a few weeks. I think this shows him that he can do it. He can score the ball no matter who's in the game," Hunter said.
Davin Miller added eight points. Keith Germain scored all seven of his points in those first 13 minutes and added six rebounds.
"We got some guys some minutes that don't normally get to play. We're working on our depth," Hunter said. "It shows we'll go anywhere and play anybody. We just wanted to come here and represent our school well and our city well and I think we did that."
