Pomeroys top IU Southeast in five-set thriller

Not all wins are created equal.
Not when you're still the new kid on the block trying to prove yourself on the proverbial playground of River States Conference women's volleyball.
In its first season in the RSC last fall, SMWC had six wins overall but just one against teams that qualified for the league's postseason tournament. With the goal to be one of those teams playing postseason games in year two, the Pomeroys have to beat some of those teams.
The Pomeroys got one of of those Tuesday night at Hamilton Arena in just their fifth conference match of the season, topping IU Southeast in a riveting five-set match by scores of 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-25, 17-15. SMWC had never defeated any of the three IU schools in the RSC.
"These are the schools we're eying up and we want to challenge every time we get on the court with them," coach Ashley Harris said. "These are the teams we have to beat in order to challenge for the RSC title. Any time we can take a set or a match from them is a big leap forward. It's a really great win for us in a lot of different areas. There's still a lot to work on."
The visiting Grenadiers, entering the match 8-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play, caught fire in the fourth set, hitting .281 with only two attack errors to force the decisive fifth set.
But in the fifth set, neither team could find a rhythm. IUS, despite seven attack errors in the set, didn't relinquish the lead until the end after jumping out to an 8-4 lead.
SMWC found a way.
The Pomeroys evened it at 11 on a Katelyn Bucy ace. Jazilyn Davis tied it again at 13 with a well-placed finesse attack for her team-best 14th kill of the match.
Ella Brooks put away her 20th kill of the match to give IUS a match point.
Amber Doyle delivered a cross-court swing to pull SMWC even at 15-15. The Grenadiers fired an attack long for the Pomeroys' first lead of the set and Hannah Zuege's swing at the outside ricocheted off the IUS block to clinch the match.
Zuege finished with 11 kills, with nine of those coming in the first three sets. Doyle had two of her 11 kills in the fifth set.
The Pomeroys posted a .117 hitting percentage in the match and overcame 15 service errors.
"It's good for us to experience that. It's good to know we can go to that fifth set and come out on top of it," Harris said.
Defensively, Raymiah Allen led the way with four blocks and Jocelyn Chavez, last week's RSC Defender of the Week, had a match-high 35 digs.
"We were really excited about this match. The IU schools are all tough, they're all good teams. We just wanted to show what we're about and I think we did that tonight," Chavez said.
