Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) men's soccer team (4-1-1) traveled to St. Louis, Missouri this afternoon to take on Harris-Stowe State University (0-2-0) in a long defensive battle between both teams. The Pomeroys pulled out the win late in the 2nd half when Freshman phenom Juan Parra (asst. Luis Botello) netted his 5th goal of the season. The Pomeroys would put the match away for good when Juan made a penalty kick in the closing minutes.
How It Happened
1st Half: Both sides had opportunities to score but a number of missed and blocked shots spoiled any chance of taking the lead. Both teams would make hastened efforts to net a goal before the half but neither could finish. The first half would close with some added fouls and discipline but the Pomeroys would look to play much more up-tempo coming out of a 0-0 draw at the half.
2nd Half: SMWC started playing faster and taking more shots with Luis Botello and Juan Parra making some quick shots but no result. Shot after shot for the Pomeroys and no one could get anything done until the 68' when Juan Parra would take an assist from Luis Botello for the lead. While SMWC would look to put the game away for good in the closing minutes, HSSU desperately needed an equalizer, leading to some chippiness on both sides and plenty of discipline. Juan Parra would capitalize on a penalty kick with his now 6th goal of the season to put the Pomeroys up 2-0. Additional cards wouldn't slow anyone down and SMWC escapes Harris-Stowe with a 2-0 win to move to 4-1-1 on the season. The Pomeroys are just one win or draw away from ensuring acceptance of their potentially second straight nationals bid.
