Men's Soccer Cages the Eagles 2-1; Juan Parra Nets Two Goals...AGAIN

Box Score

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) men's soccer team (2-0-1) took down future River States Conference (RSC) foe Midway University (0-1-0) this afternoon in a 2-1 victory! Spoiling the Eagles season opener, Juan Parra scored two (2) goals for the second time this season (yes, he's a freshman!). SMWC saw great goalie play from Andrew Aceituno who concluded the contest with four (4) saves.

How It Happened

1st Half: Off to a slow start, the Pomeroys struggled to get its offense rolling. Despite playing strong and physical defense, they found themselves in a 2-v-1 disadvantage and scoring opportunity for the Eagles. At 33:11, Midway scored from a Cheal Kwizera goal after Jacob Smith found him just inside of the 18-foot line. The first half concluded and the Pomeroys found themselves down 1-0 and trailing for the first time this season.

2nd Half: After a Coach Tizaf's halftime speech, SMWC look faster out of the break, re-focused, and ready to attack the field. SMWC battled for balls in different intentions and was fouled in the box which forced a PK. Freshman Juan Parra, the leading scorer was called upon to take the kick and he did NOT disappoint. Parra netted the tying goal and the game was 1-all at 59:41. Less than 9 minutes later, Juan Parra scored AGAIN, as he worked his way in the box and blasted a botched ball by the Eagle goalie to the back of the net. With his second goal of the contest, Parra now has tallied four (4) goals total this season.

On the team winning a tough game and his two (2) goal performance...

"I feel like we did good, we won, and that's what matters. We still have to work on a lot of stuff, we made a couple of mistakes which let them score, we have to get together as a team and start taking things more seriously. As a player, I feel like I did okay but I could have done better. But we have to keep working towards to future."

Head Coach | Abe Tizaf

On his time with the program and the senior day festivities...

"It was a tough game, it was not an easy win. Normally, we should start off well but we didn't, we were a little bit sleepy. I think their head was still in the St. Francis game. In the second half, we tried to change some positions and something in their mind that they have to keep effort and keep the shape, organization, and keep the ball moving. That was the key to this game, we have to keep the ball moving and this is what happened and we were successful. We put a lot of work in the second half but we really have to keep working on our organization in future games and our communication."
