Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell to Cincinnati Clermont on Saturday in Hamilton Arena, 85-83, to move to 7-14 on the year.
Leading the Pomeroys in scoring was sophomore Callan Taylor with 21 points. Senior Ja'Breena Gardner scored 19 points and junior Tara Parmer scored 14 points. Junior Jordyn Lloyd led SMWC on the glass with 10 rebounds, while Parmer led the team in assists with five and Taylor led in steals with four.
The Pomeroys found themselves down 9-2 to start the game before picking up their offense production to trail by just three, 22-19, to end the first quarter. The second quarter was an even tilt with both SMWC and UCC putting 24 points on the board to give UCC the 46-43 halftime lead.
The Pomeroys came out of the break and won the third quarter, 25-21, to set up a down to the wire finish in the fourth. SMWC started the fourth quarter by earning a 70-67 lead off a layup by senior Na-Shaunda Rayford. UCC responded by taking an 80-75 lead with 4:29 to play. The Pomeroys didn't quit, as three free throws by Taylor and a layup by Lloyd got the Pomeroys within one, 81-80, with 2:19 left. UCC would find ways to keep possession in the final two minutes and keep SMWC off the scoreboard until a final three-pointer by Gardner with one second left, however, UCC had added four points in the final two minutes to hand SMWC the 85-83 loss.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on February 7 when they head to Wilberforce for a 6 p.m. game.
