Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team battled NCAA DIII power Greenville to four sets on Tuesday night in Hamilton Arena. The Pomeroys fell 3-1 (20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 23-25). SMWC is now 1-3 on the year.
Sophomore McKenzi Kumpf led the Pomeroys in kills with 14, while sophomore Mary Alvanos led the team in assists with 21. Junior Madeline Howes came up with a team-high 17 digs, and SMWC finished with nine blocks as a team. Sophomore Monica Mack finished with two solo blocks and three block assists.
The Pomeroys gave perennial power Greenville a run for its money on Tuesday with every set coming down to the wire. While the Pomeroys came up just shy in sets one and two, they struck in set three, 25-20. Trying to stage the comeback down 2-1, the Pomeroys led 23-14 in the fourth set. However, strong offensive play by the Panthers stymied the Pomeroys, and GC roared back to hand SMWC the 25-20 defeat to end the match.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on September 9 and 10 when they head to Hanover to play four matches.
