Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team is heading to its second consecutive USCAA Volleyball National Championship. The #8 Pomeroys defeated #5 Rochester, 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-18), to continue their national championship run. The Pomeroys have now won a program record seven straight matches and will get a rematch from the 2015 USCAA Volleyball National Championship, as they face Florida College at 4 p.m.
As it has all tournament long, SMWC's attack was predicated on a strong presence in the middle. Sophomore Monica Mack recorded 12 kills for a .525 attack percentage. Sophomore McKenzi Kumpf also recorded 12 kills as SMWC took down RC in three straight sets. Sophomore Mary Alvanos recorded 36 assists, while junior Madeline Howes recorded a team high 16 digs.
The Pomeroys made easy work of RC in the first set, winning 25-13. Set two was a different story, with the Pomeroys having to come back from being down 21-18. Mack was the driving force behind SMWC's set two victory with four kills to bring the Pomeroys back. Set three saw SMWC fall behind 7-5 before SMWC roared back and didn't give in, as Howes sent the Pomeroys to the 2016 USCAA National Championship with an ace to earn the 25-18 victory.
