Box Score LINCOLN, Ill. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team claimed its seventh victory of the season on Tuesday night with an 80-70 win over Lincoln Christian. The Pomeroys are now 7-8 on the year and are currently ranked 13th in the USCAA.
Senior Shelby Parmer and younger sister sophomore Tara Parmer led the Pomeroys offense with 25 and 12 points, respectively. The 25 points for S. Parmer was a season-high and just four points away from her career-high, which came last season. Tuesday was the eighth time this season that T. Parmer has scored in double figures. She also matched her season-high of six steals to pace SMWC's defense, which recorded 23 steals. It was the sixth game this season in which T. Parmer has recorded five or more steals. Junior Ja'Breena Gardner notched 10 points to mark her third straight game in double figures. Freshman Lily Freese tied her career-high with nine points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. Also playing a big role on the glass was junior Bria Hill with 11 rebounds. Hill's 11 rebounds are the most by a Pomeroy this season.
The game was even in the first quarter with both sides putting 20 points on the scoreboard. The Pomeroys took a 7-2 lead to start the game off, but the Red Lions came back and went toe to toe with SMWC for the first quarter.
The second and third quarters are where the Pomeroys won the game. SMWC outscored LCU 24-17 in the second quarter to take a 44-37 lead into the break. The Pomeroys then came out in the second half and outscored the Red Lions 21-13 in the third. The Red Lions came at the Pomeroys with one final run in the fourth quarter and ended up winning the final 10 minutes, 20-15, however it wasn't enough as the Pomeroys claimed the 80-70 victory.
Tuesday marked the 11th time this season that SMWC has scored 80 plus points. The Pomeroys also continued their trend of winning the turnover battle as they forced LCU to give the ball up 37 times, which led to 32 points for SMWC.
SMWC will now face Principia on Wednesday night in St. Louis to cap their two-day road trip. Wednesday's game can be heard on Principia Internet Radio. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
