Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) volleyball team advanced to 2-0 on Wednesday night after they swept Blackburn in the program's home opener, 25-9, 25-17, 25-16.
SMWC's attack was led by junior Brylie Riddell who recorded 11 kills and seven aces. Freshman Mary Alvanos recorded 27 assists, while sophomore Madeline Howes recorded 18 digs. Freshman Gabriella Slagle recorded three solo blocks and three block assists.
The Pomeroys took set one quickly as they won 25-9. Leading the way in the first set was Riddell with four aces. The Pomeroys recorded seven aces overall in the first set, three of which came one after another from Riddell giving SMWC an 18-6 advantage. This was followed up by two more runs to give SMWC the 25-9 victory.
The second set was more of the same from the Pomeroys, as Riddell recorded seven of her 11 kills in the second set. The set started off back and forth play before the Pomeroys went on an 8-4 run to send them into set three.
The Pomeroys then built a 20-9 lead in the third set after going on an 11-3 run. The Pomeroys then finished Blackburn off with points from freshman Autum Loughead, junior Jessica Coombs and Slagle.
SMWC's front line recorded 10 total blocks on the evening as they secured the first home victory for the new program.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on September 5, when they host Brescia at 11 a.m. and Purdue Calumet at 3 p.m. in the Knoerle Center.
