Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team defeated Cincinnati Clermont, 120-107, in Saturday's home opener in the Knoerle Center. The Pomeroys are now 1-1 on the year and 1-0 against USCAA opponents.
The Pomeroys had four players score in double figures with freshman Callan Taylor leading the way with 24 points. Also scoring in double digits was senior Grace Ziegler with 22 points, senior Shelby Parmer with 20 points and sophomore Tara Parmer with 13 points. Junior Mikayla Kinneer led SMWC with seven rebounds, while three players recorded four steals in junior JaBreena Gardner, S. Parmer and junior NaShaunda Rayford.
The Pomeroys recorded 26 steals as they forced the Cougars to turn the ball over 39 times. The Pomeroys shot 42 percent (43-of-103) from the field and 36 percent (14-of-39) from three-point range. The Cougars shot 48 percent (43-of-90) and 44 percent (7-of-16) in comparison.
The lead changed four times on Saturday, and there was one tie before the Pomeroys took control midway through the second quarter. A layup by Taylor with 8:25 left in the second quarter gave SMWC the lead, 30-29, and they never surrendered it after that. SMWC would lead by as many as 25 on Saturday and sealed the home opener with a 120-107 victory.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on November 12 when they head to Indiana University – Southeast for a 7 p.m. tip.
