Box Score HILLSBORO, Ohio – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team moved to 2-3 on the year after beating Clark State on day one of the Southern State Classic on Friday. SMWC beat CS 119-74 in what was the first meeting between the two programs.
The Pomeroys had six players score in double figures with Freshman Callan Taylor and sophomore Tara Parmer leading the way with 20 points each. Freshman Kaley Sosnowski wasn't far behind with 18 points, while junior JaBreena Gardner added 13 points. Also in double figures were senior Sierra Lopez and junior Kennedy Nelson who each notched 12 points. Sosnowski was one rebound shy of a double-double, as she grabbed nine rebounds to lead SMWC on the glass. Junior Na-Shaunda Rayford and Taylor each dished out a team-high six assists.
Defensively, Parmer recorded a team-high six steals. Gardner, Taylor and freshman Lily Freese each recorded four steals. The Pomeroys recorded 32 steals as a unit and forced CS to turn the ball over 44 times.
CS hung around with SMWC early in the first quarter and even held an 18-15 lead halfway through the first. A jumper by Lopez gave SMWC the lead back, and from there the Pomeroys settled in. They closed the first quarter out with a nine point lead, 36-27, and then went on to take a 78-42 lead into halftime.
The second half was more of the same from the Pomeroys, as they continued to force turnovers and score in bunches. SMWC's largest lead of the game came in the fourth quarter when they led by 47. The Pomeroys scored nearly half of their points off of turnovers with 58 points coming from miscues by CS.
The Pomeroys will now face Southern State on day two of the Southern State Classic. SMWC's meeting with Southern State will tip at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
