Box Score 2 BEREA, Ky. – The No. 10-ranked Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team had a successful trip to Berea, Ky., on Saturday, as they defeated No. 5 Berea, 3-2 (13-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-9) and Wilmington , 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-13). The Pomeroys are now 10-7 overall and 5-1 against USCAA competition.
The Pomeroys had to battle back from being down 2-0 against #5 Berea on Saturday and took three straight sets to improve to 5-1 in USCAA play. Freshman McKenzi Kumpf had a team-high 17 kills and recorded 21 digs. Also recording double-digit digs for SMWC were junior Brylie Riddell with 22, sophomore Madeline Howes with 18 and freshman Mary Alvanos with 16. Freshmen Autum Loughead and Gabriella Slagle had four and three block assists, respectively. Slagle also recorded nine kills and four aces, while Loughead recorded eight kills.
The Pomeroys then swept Wilmington, 3-0, to record their 10th win of the season. It was the third time this season that the first year program has swept an opponent, and they were led this time by junior Jessica Coombs' team-high 11 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Madeline Howes also recorded double-digit digs with 15. Freshman Monica Mack notched four block assists and one solo block.
The #10 Pomeroys will be back in action on October 6, when they head to Oakland City for a 7 p.m. match. It will be a rematch from earlier in the season when the Pomeroys lost to OCU, 3-1 in Hamilton Arena.
