Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team came up just short of getting revenge on Lincoln Christian on Tuesday night. The Pomeroys fell 2-3 (25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 14-16) in the second meeting in a week between SMWC and LCU. The Pomeroys finish their inaugural season with a 14-14 overall record, and they will learn tomorrow if their current position of ninth in the USCAA Coaches' Poll will be enough to put them into the USCAA National Tournament.
The Pomeroys were led by freshman McKenzi Kumpf who recorded a double-double with team high 16 kills and 27 digs. Freshman Autum Loughead was second on the team in kills with nine, and she recorded two solo blocks and four block assists. Sophomore Madeline Howes led the team in digs with 28. Junior Brylie Riddell also recorded a double-double with eight kills and 12 digs, while freshman Monica Mack added eight kills and five block assists. Freshman Mary Alvanos recorded 34 assists on the night.
SMWC powered through the first two sets to win 25-21 and 25-20. It was the final three sets that gave SMWC trouble. The third set got away from the Pomeroys as they fell behind 21-16, ultimately falling 25-19. Set four was a close one with SMWC holding a 21-20 lead, before kills by LCU gave the Red Lions the victory to force a fifth set. The fifth set saw SMWC fall behind 11-5 before SMWC went on a five point run to make it 11-10. The Pomeroys then battled to take a 14-12 lead, but three attack errors mixed with kills by the Red Lions gave LCU the 16-14 victory.
The Pomeroys have concluded the first regular season in program history with a .500 record and are currently ranked ninth in the USCAA Coaches' Poll. The USCAA Volleyball National Tournament Selection Show will air tomorrow at 2 p.m. on the USCAA's website.
