Box Score BATAVIA, Ohio – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team defeated UC-Clermont on Thursday, 76-71, to move to 4-9 overall and 3-0 in the USCAA.
The Pomeroys were led by junior Shelby Parmer, who recorded 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals. Junior Grace Ziegler scored 15 points, sophomore NaShaunda Rayford scored 12 points, sophomore Jabreena Gardner notched 12 points and junior Sierra Lopez recorded 9 points and 10 rebounds. Defensively, junior Desiree Irizarry added four steals.
The Pomeroys found themselves in an early hole as they went into the break trailing the Cougars 41-36. The Pomeroys never led in the first half as the Cougars jumped out to a 10-4 lead to start the game. The Cougars shot 55 percent (16-of-29) from the field in the first half, but nine first half points by S. Parmer and nine steals by SMWC helped keep the Pomeroys within striking distance.
In the second half, the Pomeroys jumped out and cut the Cougars lead to 41-40 after a 3-pointer by Ziegler pulled SMWC within one. The Cougars then went on a 10-0 run to put the Pomeroys down 51-40, however, the Pomeroys kept fighting. A layup by senior Alaura McKemie pulled the Pomeroys back within three and with 10:01 on the clock the Pomeroys trailed 54-51.
The Pomeroys then tightened up defensively and took a 62-60 lead off of a 3-pointer by S. Parmer with 7:36 on the clock. The final 7:36 saw the game tied up on four occasions and SMWC stayed out front to get the 76-71 victory.
