Pomeroys Complete Sweep of MLK Classic to Win Fifth Straight

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 14th-ranked Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team completed the sweep of the MLK Classic on Sunday after beating 13th-ranked Briarcliffe, 81-62. The Pomeroys remain unbeaten, 7-0, in the USCAA and are 8-9 overall. The Pomeroys finished the MLK Classic averaging 89 points a game and outscoring their opponents by a margin of 21 points.

SMWC again had multiple players in double figures on Sunday, with junior Grace Ziegler leading the way with 17 points. Sophomore JaBreena Gardner added 13 points, while junior Shelby Parmer and freshman Jordyn Lloyd recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Sierra Lopez led SMWC on the glass, grabbing a season-high 13 rebounds. S. Parmer led SMWC in assists, as she recorded eight assists for the third time this season. Defensively, Gardner grabbed a game-high four steals.

The Pomeroys allowed the Bulldogs to score the first points of the game, but then SMWC quickly built a double-digit lead that lasted the majority of the first half. SMWC shot 43 percent (22-of-51) from the floor in the first half and led by as many as 33, four minutes before halftime. The Pomeroys went into the break leading 55-42 from the help of S. Parmer, Ziegler and Gardner all scoring 10+ first half points. The Pomeroys forced the Bulldogs to turn the ball over 23 times in the first half, which led to 23 points.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 3-point basket to lower the Pomeroys lead to 28. SMWC remained ahead of the Bulldogs by double figures for the entire second half, only allowing Briarcliffe to pull within 12 with 4:01 to play. The Pomeroys finished the game on a layup by sophomore NaShaunda Rayford to seal the 81-62 victory.

S. Parmer finished the MLK Classic averaging 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.3 assists. Ziegler finished the classic averaging 18.3 points, Gardner averaged 11.3 points, and Lopez brought in 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

The Pomeroys will be back in action on Jan. 24, when they head to Andrews for a 7 p.m. tip.
