Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Saint-Mary-of-the Woods College basketball team defeated the No. 1 team in USCAA Division II on day one of the MLK Classic at the Apprentice School. The Pomeroys defeated Berkeley College, 92-62, to move to 5-0 against USCAA opponents.
The Pomeroys were led by junior Grace Ziegler's 23 points, while junior Shelby Parmer added 18 and sophomore Mikayla Kinneer added 12 points. S. Parmer added a team-high seven assists, while freshman Tara Parmer added five additional assists. Freshman Jordyn Lloyd tied her season-high for rebounds, as she grabbed 11 boards. Defensively, sophomore NaShaunda Rayford recorded a team-high three steals.
The Pomeroys jumped out to an early lead that turned into double digits with 12:57 on the clock. The Pomeroys took their largest lead of the first half, 29-15, with 8:25 on the clock. The Pomeroys shot just 29 percent (12-of-42) from the field in the first half, but forced the Knights to turn the ball over 17 times, which made all the difference in the first half.
The second half saw the Pomeroys build their lead. SMWC took a 34 point lead, 77-43, with 7:27 on the clock. SMWC's big second half was powered by Kinneer, Ziegler and S. Parmer, who recorded 10, 12 and 13 second half points, respectively. The Pomeroys shot considerably better in the second half, shooting 48 percent (20-of-41) from the field in the final 20 minutes. The Pomeroys also shot well above their season average from the free throw line, making 84 percent (16-of-19) of their freebies.
