Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team opened up their 2014-15 home season with a 93-71 victory over Lincoln Christian College. The Pomeroys not only won their 2014-15 home opener, but they also christened the new Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center with the first victory in the brand new facility.
The Pomeroys had five players score double figures with junior Shelby Parmer leading the way. Parmer recorded 18 points and led the team, defensively, with seven steals. Fellow junior Grace Ziegler recorded 12 points, while sophomore NaShaunda Rayford, sophomore Kennedy Nelson and junior Desiree Irizarry each recorded 10 points. Nelson also led the Pomeroys on the glass with eight rebounds.
After the pregame festivities were through and the first jump ball was tossed, Nelson took the first shot at the 19:46 mark. The first points scored came from Rayford as she drained a three-pointer with 19:21 on the clock. The Pomeroys never trailed in the first half of the game, and their largest lead of that half came with 1:39 on the clock, as a free throw by Irizarry gave SMWC a 21 point lead. The Pomeroys ended the first half with a 50-30 lead.
The second half was closer, but SMWC's large first half lead sealed the game for SMWC. The Pomeroys scored 43 second half points, while LCU scored 41 to give SMWC the 93-71 victory. Zeigler led the way for SMWC in the final 20 minutes with eight points.
The Pomeroys finished the game shooting 33 percent (35-of-105) from the field and 17 percent (8-of-47) from three-point range. LCU shot 42 percent (27-of-65) from the field and 20 percent (2-of-10) from three-point range.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on November 19 when they head to Earlham College in a 7:30 p.m. tip time.
