Box Score On Thursday night, the Pomeroy basketball team dropped their fifth straight road game to Lady Golden Eagles of Spalding University 87-53.
Limited with only two players off the bench, the Pomeroys kept the score close in the early stages of the game. Trailing 22-20 over halfway through the first half, Spalding went on a critical 12-4 run off four quick SMWC turnovers. That key run was enough to give the hosts a comfortable 42-28 lead at the break.
To begin the second half, Spalding was hot out of the gate with a 17-2 run. This pushed the advantage for the Lady Golden Eagles to 29 points and a lead in which the Pomeroys would never fully be able to recover. SMWC would go on a brief 12-6 run of their own, but never were able to make the game close. At the final buzzer, the score read 87-53 in favor of Spalding.
Three Pomeroys scored in double figures. Whitney Allen led the team with 13 points and 5-of-13 shooting from the field. Brandi McDaniel had 11 points and Chelsea Weaver finished with 10 points. Sierra Lopez, in limited minutes, secured a team-high nine rebounds.
Spalding was led by Kelly Harrod who had a game-high 29 points and 15 rebounds. Kristin Baker and Jazmin Smith also chipped in with 10 points apiece for the Lady Golden Eagles.
Spalding improves their record to 8-10 while the Pomeroys drop to 5-16 on the season.
The Pomeroys will finish up their six game road trip with a quick turnaround in today's matchup with UC-Clermont in Cincinnati, Ohio. This will be the second meeting of the two schools. SMWC won 104-91 back on Jan. 5. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
